Claims and Evidence Conversation Tool

In claims and evidence conversations, teachers and students work together to make sense of the evidence from investigations. They make claims - thinking about what they know based on the investigation.  They think how and why results happen and what they mean.

Uncertainty often comes up as students disagree about what claims they can make, think about what to count as evidence, and consider how their results generalize.

This tool has been developed to guide teachers through supporting productive Claims & Evidence conversations in the classroom. In it, we walk through what you need to know about claims and evidence, preparing for the conversation, and the different parts of the conversation, including examples of what you can say and do to support children.

In the Investigations Framework, this conversation focuses on helping students navigate uncertainty in the transitions between investigation and observations, as well as some of the uncertainty involved in generalizing from an investigation designed to answer a question.
