Uncertainty Design Strategies

As we design and adapt science investigations, we use a variety of strategies to work with different forms of uncertainty. Sometimes, we want to reduce an uncertainty. In other cases, we think it is productive for students to grapple with it, and we use structures that support uncertainty to emerge and be made public. In addition, we have developed strategies that increase students’ resources for recognizing and grappling with uncertainty.

This tool describes strategies we have used for each of these purposes, provides a rationale, and gives examples from our investigations. We hope it will be useful to others who are designing and adapting their own investigations.
